Who we are and why we do it

TVPS really began in 1985, as a support group organised by HIV positive people in the area, where they would meet and talk about their experiences of being positive at each other’s houses. We have come a long way since then, but the values set out by our founding members are still at the core of TVPS, and why we have managed to grow and become a crucial part of the sexual health support community in Berkshire.

TVPS currently supports 550 people with, on average, two new referrals a week. We have centres in both Slough and Reading and also work in partnership with other organisations to be able to offer a wide range of support and effective, and relevant, signposting.

Our support is still extremely relevant, as HIV infections within the UK are still on the rise,  with both Slough and Reading being flagged up by the department of health as HIV 'hot spots' in the UK. The support TVPS provides is also essential as sadly HIV is still a virus that is surrounded by stigma. Our centre is a safe haven for people to be able to come and talk openly and honestly about HIV without fear of being discriminated against. We also work hard raising awareness and try to educate the community, as to combat stigma, we feel knowledge is the key.
