Respite & Retreat - "Recognising a Need" - An OverviewWhat is Rest & Respite?It is an opportunity for those infected &/or affect by HIV/AIDs to visit or stay at various facilities around the country, irrespective of their creed, colour, race or gender.They are able to receive a break from either their home life, society in general or caring for a loved one. The facilities offer varying terms of occupation and levels of service;
Day release and short breaks are more for relaxation, it offers an opportunity for both infected &/or affected individuals to socialise in an unbiased safe environment, where they can be themselves. Medium & residential are predominately more medical centres fully equipped with fully qualified staff, to care for those who need greater assistance with everyday living or who are physically unable to care for themselves. Generally, for those who are in the latter stages. Why do we need it / how is it beneficial?People infected by HIV often live in isolation, not feeling free to share their hopes and fears with family and friends. These facilities offer a much needed safe setting where friends and family can share experiences, take stock of their present situation, find emotional strength and support in each other to continue their lives, whilst enjoying a break. It is also an opportunity of emotional support for those affected by HIV due to a loved one, they can spend time in the company of others who are experiencing a similar situation.How are they funded?Generally by government funding, help from other larger charities/organisations, the good nature and generosity of the general public or patrons.Current SituationMoney is greatly needed for this specialist service. Unfortunately, changes in funding has lead to a decrease in grant availability which has resulted in the closure of some centres, including the ‘Living Room’ (The September issue of @TVPS).This in combination with medical advancements has resulted, in some cases, to a change in attitude expressed below by an individual of a well know HIV charity; “In the advent of anti-HIV drugs people are surviving, therefore long term survival is guaranteed, therefore there is no longer a need for this type of support”. We whole hearted disagree with this sentiment and are thoroughly disappointed in the lack of empathy and understanding, as there are no absolutes or guarantees that this is at present the case. It may well be in the future, however, right now people still living with the virus (medicated or not) and their carers or loved ones, are still in desperate need of this specialist support. We strongly advocate these facilities and will continue to fight for more money & recognition of their unquestionable benefit to those infected & affected by HIV & AIDs!
